Roesler, Max and Elizabeth Memorial Scholarship Fund
$1,500.00
This scholarship is to assist non-traditional students already enrolled in a or beginning college, university, or trade school program, re-training due to changes in the workplace, or who desires to better their life through additional educational opportunities. Applicant may be a full time or part time student. Applicant should be 25 years or older at time of application. Applicants must be a current resident of Noble County, Indiana. Applicant may reapply. Awards $1,500
Donor Fund Story:
Max Roesler III started the Max and Elizabeth Roesler Scholarship in memory of his parents Max II and Elizabeth Roesler. Max II was born to German immigrants in Chicago, Illinois. He worked through college in Chicago and his first business job was in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He retired as treasurer of Essex Wire Corporation. Max’s mother came from a large family of four sisters and two brothers in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She grew up in the Catholic Church and went through nurses training.
His parents met through Elizabeth’s sister who happened to share an office with Max II. They were married, and went on to have three children. Elizabeth volunteered as a nurse and Max II was an avid gardener along with his business career. Max III said that both parents were very supportive of their children’s athletic endeavors and enjoyed going to athletic events to be there for their children. Due to cancer, his dad only lived to be 62, but his mom lived till she was 92.
Max says, “My [parents] loved and cared for us siblings as well as other people.” He recalls that they were people of integrity and lived that out by being straightforward and honest through their communication and through their examples. His parents wanted their children to grow up in a spiritual household, receive a college education, and be able to support themselves someday. Family was very important to them.
Max III has led a respectable life as well. He graduated from Fort Wayne Central Catholic High School in 1951 and went on to receive an accounting degree from Notre Dame University in 1955. After graduation, he worked at an accounting firm for a few months, and then was drafted into the Navy in the Far East. After he got out of the Navy, he went back to Chicago and married his longtime friend, Ginny, in 1958. They eventually moved back to the Fort Wayne area and raised their three boys and two girls. While in Fort Wayne, Ginny became the assistant athletic director at the Bishop Luers High School and Max worked at Lincoln National Corporation as treasurer. They now have eleven grandchildren and live on a lake where Max enjoys fishing and gardening and Ginny enjoys a good game of bridge.
Max III and Ginny have been very involved with their community in Noble County. Max has served with the Noble County Community Foundation Inc., Noble County Parkview Hospital Board and Foundation, Parkview Health System Finance Committee, and he has also served as the chair of the Rome City Conservancy. Ginny has been active in St. Gaspar Catholic Church, serves on the Kendallville Library Foundation, and loves meeting people in the community.
When asked why he appreciates Noble County, Max III said, “It’s comprised of many, many good people. There are a lot of resources and lakes and lots to do. It’s always been home for us, [first] for vacation and now to live [permanently].”
Max III says that he owes it to his parents to make this scholarship come into existence, because of the person he was able to become because of them.
Max says, “I thank God for a pretty good life.”
