Donor Fund Story:
This fund was established in 1999 by the Hornett family in memory of Lolita. At the time of Lolita Hornett’s death, her entire family wanted to do something positive that would memorialize her dedication to the nursing profession in perpetuity. “The programs of the Noble County Community Foundation gave us the vehicle to make this possible, and the gifts received from family, friends and the community turned our dream into a reality. Our family has found tremendous solace in working on this scholarship effort, and local students will reap the benefit of Lolita’s life and work for years to come,” the Hornett Family.
Lolita graduated from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She married Joseph A. Hornett in October 1952. From 1959-1964, she was director of nurses at McCray Memorial Hospital in Kendallville. She worked for Dr. Max Sneary (1973-1986), Sacred Heart Home (1987-1989), and was Kraft General Foods plant nurse (1989-1994).
Joseph died in December 2015. He served in the United States Army from 1952-1954. Joseph was the sales administrator with both McCray Refrigeration and Flint & Walling in Kendallville before retiring in 1997. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 50-year member of the American Legion Post 86, member of the V.F.W. Post 2749 men’s auxiliary, and life member of the Elks Lodge 1194, all in Kendallville.
